The Cardinal Tetra (Paracheirodon axelrodi) is a small, vividly colored freshwater fish popular in aquariums worldwide. Native to the blackwater streams of the Orinoco and Rio Negro basins in South America, it thrives in warm, acidic waters rich in tannins.

Key Features:

  1. Coloration:

    • Bright neon blue stripe running horizontally along its body.
    • Vivid red stripe extending from mid-body to the tail.
    • Silvery-white underbelly.
  2. Size: Typically 2.5 to 3 cm (about 1 inch) in length.

  3. Lifespan: Around 4–5 years in well-maintained aquariums.

  4. Behavior:

    • Peaceful and schooling by nature.
    • Best kept in groups of at least six to ten, as they feel more secure and display better coloration.
  5. Habitat Requirements:

    • Water Temperature: 23–27°C (73–81°F).
    • pH: 4.0–7.0 (preferring soft, acidic water).
    • Tank setup: Heavily planted with subdued lighting to mimic their natural environment.

The Cardinal Tetra is similar to the Neon Tetra but distinguished by its continuous red stripe extending the full length of the body. It’s a favorite among hobbyists due to its striking appearance and compatibility with other peaceful species.
