The Celestial Pearl Danio (Danio margaritatus), sometimes referred to as the Galaxy Rasbora, is a stunning freshwater fish known for its vibrant colors and peaceful nature. It is a popular choice among aquarium enthusiasts due to its striking appearance and relatively small size. Here's a quick overview:

Appearance

  • Body Coloration: The fish has a deep blue body covered with pearly, iridescent spots, resembling a starry sky.
  • Fins: Their fins are bright orange or red with contrasting black markings, adding to their beauty.
  • Size: Adults typically grow to about 1 inch (2.5 cm) in length, making them suitable for nano aquariums.

Habitat

  • Natural Range: Native to small, vegetated ponds in Myanmar (Burma), particularly in the Shan Plateau region.
  • Water Conditions: They thrive in soft, slightly acidic to neutral water with temperatures ranging from 73–79°F (23–26°C).

Behavior

  • Social Nature: Celestial Pearl Danios are schooling fish and feel more secure in groups of at least 6–8 individuals.
  • Temperament: They are peaceful and get along well with other small, non-aggressive fish.

Aquarium Care

  • Tank Size: A minimum of 10 gallons is recommended, though larger tanks allow for more stable water conditions and space for schooling behavior.
  • Aquascape: Provide plenty of plants, hiding spots, and open swimming areas.
  • Diet: Omnivorous, they thrive on high-quality micro pellets, live or frozen foods (like daphnia and brine shrimp), and plant matter.

Breeding

Celestial Pearl Danios are egg scatterers and relatively easy to breed under the right conditions. A separate breeding tank with fine-leaved plants or spawning mops can help protect the eggs, as adults may eat them.

Conservation

Overcollection for the aquarium trade initially threatened their populations. However, sustainable captive breeding programs have since reduced pressure on wild populations. When buying, look for responsibly sourced or captive-bred specimens.
