Hyphessobrycon vinaceus, commonly known as the wine tetra, is a small species of freshwater fish from the Characidae family. Like other members of the genus Hyphessobrycon, these fish are native to South America and are popular in the aquarium trade due to their striking colors and peaceful temperament.

Key Features:

  • Size: Typically grows to about 2.5–4 cm (1–1.6 inches) in length.
  • Coloration: Known for a reddish or wine-colored body with iridescent hues that shimmer under light. The intensity of the coloration can depend on the fish's health, diet, and environment.
  • Behavior: Peaceful and schooling, they thrive in groups of at least 6-8 individuals. They are active swimmers and generally non-aggressive, making them good tank mates for other small, peaceful species.
  • Habitat: Found in slow-moving streams and rivers with dense vegetation and soft, acidic water in their natural range.
  • Diet: Omnivorous, feeding on small invertebrates, plant matter, and detritus in the wild. In captivity, they do well on a varied diet of high-quality flake food, small pellets, and occasional live or frozen foods like brine shrimp or daphnia.

Aquarium Care:

  • Tank Size: A minimum of 10–15 gallons for a small school.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: 22–28°C (72–82°F)
    • pH: 5.5–7.0
    • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard
  • Decoration: A planted tank with subdued lighting and dark substrate to enhance their colors. Adding driftwood and leaf litter can simulate their natural habitat.
  • Breeding: They are egg scatterers and require a separate breeding tank with fine-leaved plants or spawning mops. After spawning, remove the adults to prevent egg predation.
