One of our most ambitious projects to date, this outdoor aquarium-paludarium seamlessly blends rainforest and river ecosystems in a client's porch.
The Technical Challenge
When our clients approached us, they had a specific vision to recreate the Amazon rainforest ecosystem - complete with both terrestrial and aquatic environments. This required thoughtful planning and precise execution.
We started by collaborating with a skilled carpenter to build a cabinet from high-quality chengal wood, selected specifically for its durability in outdoor settings. The tank itself uses premium low-iron glass imported for its exceptional clarity, giving viewers an undistorted view into this ecosystem.
The technical components were selected for performance and reliability:
1. Skylight Hyperspot lighting creates realistic shimmering light effects that penetrate to the river floor
2. Dual Aquael Ultramax 4500 filtration systems provide robust biological and mechanical filtration
3. Teco TK2000 temperature control maintains a consistent 24°C environment, even outdoors
4. Custom misting system simulates natural rainfall patterns to nourish plants and maintain humidity
Authentic Design Approach
We worked closely with our clients through multiple design iterations to determine the ideal scale and specifications. Our guiding principle was authenticity - to achieve this, we used materials, and livestock native to the amazon rainforest.
1. Substrate materials were chosen to match those found in the Amazon river basin (La Plata)
2. The sprinkler system was calibrated to mimic natural rainfall patterns
3. Fish population includes native Amazon species like Altum Angels and Moenkhausia Rubra platinum
